Five men arrested over massive ‘£3.5million drugs bust

Police uncovered a huge haul at a High Street address and arrested five suspects in connection with the ongoing probe

FIVE men have been nicked after cops uncovered drugs worth an estimated £3.5million.

Officers swooped on a property in Fraserburgh town centre on Friday.

They uncovered a huge haul at an address in the High Street and arrested five suspects in connection with the ongoing probe.

The force said substances include Class A and B narcotics including ecstasy, amphetamine and mephedrone.

Two men, aged 26 and 30, appeared at Peterhead Sheriff Court on Monday in connection with the find – said to be one of the biggest ever in the north-east of Scotland.

A further two men, aged 23 and 35, were arrested and charged yesterday and appeared at the same court earlier today.

A fifth man, aged 26, was arrested and charged today and is due to appear in the dock tomorrow.

Detective Inspector John Pirie said: “This is one of the largest drugs recoveries in the North East area and it will have a huge impact on the illegal supply chain in Scotland.

“This work underlines our commitment to the Serious Organised Crime Taskforce and the country’s Serious Organised Crime Strategy.

“Taking drugs off the street is a priority for Scottish Police.

“They cause misery in our communities, and the public has a vital role in helping us to trace those involved in the supply of illegal substances.”

Details of the discovery emerged days after we told how three men had appeared in court in connection with an alleged £8 million bust – one of the largest in Scotland.

Charles McAughey, of Carluke, and Mark Paterson of Larkhall face misuse of drugs charges alongside Kieran O’Carroll of County Clare, Ireland.

The trio made no plea when they stood in the dock during a short hearing yesterday at Hamilton Sheriff Court.

McAughey, 65, faces two allegations of supplying controlled drugs and a third charge of being involved in serious organised crime.

Paterson and O’Carroll are accused of a single supply charge as well as claims they too are involved in organised crime.

Officers swooped on a premises on Melford Road in Bellshill, Lanarkshire on Thursday last week amid an ongoing probe.

Detectives Superintendent Steven Elliot said: “This was a sizeable recovery – one of the most significant we’ve seen in Scotland.”
