Man (20s) held with €33,000 of drugs after road stop

Man in his 20s was arrested in County Roscommon with €33,000 worth of suspected drugs following reports of dangerous driving.

Gardaí in Roscommon have arrested and charged a man who was caught in possession of over €33,000 of suspected cannabis and cocaine in Boyle.

The man, who is in his 20s, was arrested and detained at a garda station in the Garda North Western Region under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 and appeared before a special sitting of Ballyshannon District Court on New Year’s Eve.

The seized drugs will be sent to Forensic Science Ireland for analysis, and investigations are ongoing.

This comes after gardaí increased patrols in the Boyle area following complaints from the public about alleged dangerous driving and careless driving along the N4 leading into the town over the festive period.

It is understood that the activity involved cars speeding, racing and doing doughnuts on the N4 and had been ongoing since December 24. As a direct result of the extra garda patrols, a vehicle driven by the suspect was stopped in Corrigeenroe, Boyle, on December 30, and a quantity of drugs was seized.

A garda spokesperson said such patrols will continue, in conjunction with Roads Policing Units in the area, to deter and detect any breaches of road traffic legislation.

Any member of the public who wishes to report dangerous driving may contact An Garda Síochána to provide details and/or dash-cam footage, if available.
