Police uncovered a ‘substantial’ cannabis factory after attending reports of a ‘hostile male’ with a weapon in a Newry shop.

The Police made the discovery after carrying out safety checks on the mans home.
Police in Newry were called on an incident at a shop in the city earlier this week after receiving reports of a hostile male who was armed with a weapon who was later located in the Talbot Street area.
The man was arrested and a mallet was seized by officers who then carried out a safety check on the male’s home where they discovered a cannabis factory. The male has since been arrested and charged with a number of offences, appearing in court on Friday where he was remanded into custody. A PSNI spokesperson said: ‘During the week, Newry Local Policing Team C Section received a report of a hostile male in a local shop, possibly in possession of a weapon.
Officers responded swiftly and located the male in the Talbot Street area. ‘The “weapon” turned out to be a mallet, but that was only the beginning of the incident. ‘Due to the male’s demeanor and the fact he was carrying an item capable of causing harm, officers carried out checks to ensure everyone inside his home was safe.
Thankfully, no one was injured but officers uncovered a substantial cannabis factory inside the property. ‘The factory has now been fully dismantled and seized. The male was arrested, interviewed, and charged with several offences including Cultivation of Cannabis and Possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.
He appeared in court yesterday morning and has been remanded into custody. ‘Another reminder that what may start as one call can lead to something much bigger. We will continue to take every opportunity to tackle drug supply and usage in the district – whether it’s a hammer, a mallet, or a not-so-secret garden.’
