Rotterdam police seize €41,000 hidden in man’s clothing

Police in Rotterdam seized €41,000 in cash hidden throughout a man’s clothing during a stop and search, prompting further investigation.

Rotterdam police stopped and searched a man at around 10:20 p.m. Monday, who had 41,000 euros in cash concealed throughout his clothing, seizing the money, police said on Instagram. “It turned out to be an amount that we had not encountered in this form before,” police said.

Police did not say why they took their suspect into custody, but the arresting officer checked the man for “prohibited or dangerous objects” as part of proper procedures. “To our great surprise,” police said, “colleagues found a huge amount of cash during the search.”

Finding cash on a suspect may be common, but not tens of thousands of euros, police said. “Banknotes were hidden everywhere: in his vest, pockets, and several layers of clothing. It turned out to be an amount we had never encountered in this form before,” officers from Rotterdam wrote on Instagram.

As the search continued, officers found one banknote after another, until a final tally of 41,000 euros was reached. “The money was carefully secured, counted, and administratively recorded according to established procedures.”

Authorities seized the money. “The search further proceeded calmly and professionally, with the safety of both the suspect and colleagues always being paramount,” police said.
