Two suspects were arrested in Romania after an investigation into a fake dark web site offering murder-for-hire services.

Two individuals have been arrested in Romania following an ERSOU investigation into a fraudulent dark web platform that claimed to offer services such as murder-for-hire.
On 14 January 2026, coordinated search warrants were carried out as part of a joint operation between ERSOU and the Romanian Police Cybercrime Unit.
The action was linked to a scam website known as Online Killers Marketplace (OKM), which falsely advertised criminal services including contract killings and extortion. Although none of the services promoted by the site were genuine, law enforcement agencies worldwide have previously secured convictions against individuals who attempted to use the platform to harm others, while also safeguarding intended victims.
The most recent phase of the investigation was led by ERSOU’s Cyber, Dark Web and Digital Forensics teams. It focused on identifying those believed to be responsible for operating the site and managing the proceeds generated through it.

Searches were conducted at three locations in Bucharest and Râmnicu Vâlcea, with support from partner agencies including the National Crime Agency and Europol.
As a result of the operation, authorities seized cryptocurrency valued at more than $600,000, along with significant amounts of cash. This included nearly €50,000 in euros and Romanian currency estimated to be worth around £48,000.
The two suspects, aged 33 and 35, have been released under investigation in Romania while enquiries continue and charging decisions are considered.
ERSOU is continuing to work alongside international partners to dismantle the digital infrastructure associated with the website.
Detective Chief Inspector Mike Pereira said the investigation was both “complex and far-reaching” and praised the collaboration involved.
“The combined efforts of our Cyber, Dark Web and Digital Forensics teams, together with the NCA and Europol, were crucial in allowing us to take firm action against those suspected of running this fraudulent platform and to protect potential victims,” he said.
He also highlighted the importance of support from Romanian authorities, noting that their cooperation enabled simultaneous searches across multiple locations and the seizure of substantial assets linked to the criminal operation.
