South Korea Develops Crypto Tool to Track Drug Crime

South Korea plans a crypto tracking system to curb dark web drug trafficking by analyzing crypto flows and online illicit ads with advanced tech.

South Korea has launched a project to build an advanced monitoring system designed to curb drug trafficking conducted through cryptocurrencies on dark web platforms, the Ministry of Science and ICT announced.

Under the three-year initiative, supported by a ₩13.2 billion (about $9.8 million) budget, authorities will select a research institution to develop the system, with applications open through March.

The planned technology will analyze patterns across anonymous networks to help identify individuals behind illegal drug postings, track the movement of illicit funds, and automatically gather slang and coded language used in online ads using artificial intelligence.

Officials said cutting-edge analytical tools are crucial to responding to emerging drug-related crimes that exploit the anonymity of the dark web, encrypted messaging apps like Telegram, and other methods. The government aims to bolster its capacity to tackle new types of crime through scientific and technological advancements.
