Police Stop Overloaded Van, Seize 300 Laughing Gas Bottles

Dutch police stop a heavily overloaded van on the A12 motorway and discover about 300 bottles of laughing gas, arresting a driver.

Dutch police pulled over an overloaded van on the A12 motorway on Tuesday and uncovered an estimated 300 bottles of nitrous oxide, commonly known as “laughing gas,” officers said.

The vehicle, travelling westbound near Jaasper, appeared heavily burdened and unstable, prompting officers to conduct a traffic stop for safety reasons. During a subsequent search of the van’s interior and cargo area, they located a large quantity of pressurised nitrous oxide cylinders, which are often misused recreationally and are subject to regulatory restrictions in the Netherlands.

The driver was detained at the scene as the discovery sparked further investigation into the origin of the consignments and whether the shipment was connected to wider nitrous oxide distribution activities. Police said the bottles were not secured safely inside the vehicle, posing a danger to road users and the occupants.

Laughing gas, while used legitimately in medical and catering applications, has seen increased recreational misuse in recent years. Large quantities transported outside legitimate supply chains often draw law enforcement attention due to public safety concerns, potential environmental hazards, and links to unregulated distribution networks.

Police are continuing inquiries to determine the destination of the nitrous oxide bottles and possible criminal links. Additional charges related to illegal transport of controlled substances and road safety violations are being considered.
