NZ Police dismantle a dark web drug syndicate in Waikato and Auckland after a 9-month probe, seizing cash, firearms and illicit drugs.

The New Zealand Police have dismantled a major dark web drug syndicate operating across Waikato and Auckland following a nine-month investigation dubbed Operation Solana.
Authorities allege the group imported and distributed significant quantities of methamphetamine, cocaine, MDMA and ketamine throughout New Zealand using dark web marketplaces, encrypted messaging platforms and cryptocurrency payments to conceal their identities.

Over a two-day enforcement phase, officers executed 16 search warrants across Auckland and Hamilton, resulting in 11 arrests. Police seized substantial quantities of illicit drugs, approximately $500,000 in cash, and three firearms including a 3D-printed weapon.

Investigators say the syndicate sourced drugs from overseas suppliers in the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States. International law enforcement partners reportedly intercepted more than 200 kilograms of shipments linked to the network during the course of the operation.
Those arrested, aged between their mid-20s and early 40s, are facing charges including drug importation and supply, unlawful possession of firearms, and participation in an organised criminal group. Police stated the case demonstrates that criminal activity conducted via the dark web is traceable and prosecutable.
Authorities emphasised that anonymity tools and encrypted platforms do not shield offenders from identification, and warned that further enforcement action targeting online drug distribution networks remains ongoing.
