Hackers Threaten to Leak Data of 8M People After Odido Breach

ShinyHunters claims it stole data of millions from Odido, demands ransom or threatens dark web leak, telecom urges caution.

Hackers are threatening to publicly release sensitive personal data belonging to millions of customers of Dutch telecom provider Odido unless the company pays more than €1 million in ransom, according to reports from RTL Nieuws.

The cybercriminal group ShinyHunters, which claims responsibility for the attack, says it has stolen data linked to roughly 8 million people a figure larger than Odido’s own estimate of 6.2 million affected current and former customers. The alleged stolen information includes names, addresses, bank account numbers and even passport numbers, and the hackers are using dark web platforms to pressure the telecom firm into paying.

Odido has acknowledged a major data breach affecting millions of customers but disputes the higher figure claimed by the attackers. The company says the compromised data includes names, addresses and account information, but maintains that passwords, call records and billing details were not accessed.

Security experts say publicly threatening to post stolen data is a common extortion tactic after private negotiations fail. Some analysts believe Odido now faces a difficult cost-benefit choice between paying to try to protect customer data with no guaranteed outcome or risking a dark web leak that could expose highly sensitive personal information and fuel scams such as phishing and identity fraud.

In response to the incident, Odido has warned customers to be vigilant for “suspicious and unusual activity” involving their accounts, and cybersecurity professionals advise affected individuals to monitor financial accounts and communications carefully.

Authorities and privacy advocates have underscored the broader implications of such breaches, noting that leaked identity data can be exploited in targeted attacks and long-term fraud campaigns if it appears on dark web forums, even if ransom demands are met.
