Dutch Police Display Hologram to Find 2009 Rape Suspect

Police unveil a composite sketch and hologram of a man wanted for the 2009 rape of a 15-year-old near Bilthoven to prompt public tips.

Dutch police have released a composite sketch and a hologram-style 3D model of a man wanted in connection with the 2009 rape of a 15-year-old girl in the Panbos woods near Bilthoven, hoping the visual will prompt new leads in the cold case.

The attack occurred on 4 September 2009, when the victim was assaulted on a bike path between Bilthoven and Bosch en Duin in broad daylight. Descriptions from the time indicate the suspect was on foot, light-skinned with dark hair and possibly blue eyes, wearing a blue tracksuit jacket with white stripes, and smelling of alcohol. He was believed to be between about 30 and 40 years old then and would now likely be in his mid-40s to 60s.

Police spokesperson Suzallen Lesquillier said the 3D model will be displayed as a hologram in central Bilthoven to catch the attention of locals and encourage anyone who recognises the likeness to come forward. Lesquillier noted that while the model may not be a perfect match to the suspect’s appearance in 2009, the public reaction to the visuals may lead to valuable information.

Officers initially appealed for information last year and have investigated all tips provided, including requests for DNA comparisons from individuals identified through leads none of which have yet matched. Based on any new tips the hologram may generate, more men could be asked to provide DNA samples to assist the inquiry.

A €10,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to the identification and arrest of the suspect.
