Dutch Customs Seize 400kg Cocaine Hidden in Bananas

Dutch customs seized 400kg of cocaine hidden in a banana shipment from Ecuador at the port of Vlissingen.

Dutch customs authorities have seized 400 kilograms of cocaine hidden inside a shipment of bananas that arrived from Ecuador, officials confirmed.

The drugs were discovered on March 6 during an inspection at the port of Vlissingen. According to the Dutch Public Prosecution Service, the cocaine was concealed within a pallet of bananas transported by ship from Ecuador. Authorities said the narcotics were confiscated and later destroyed.

The discovery was made during a routine customs inspection triggered by a risk-analysis system that identifies potentially suspicious cargo entering Dutch ports. Such checks are commonly used to detect drugs hidden inside legitimate commercial shipments.

Although the amount seized in Vlissingen has decreased compared to previous years, officials say this does not necessarily indicate that trafficking activity is declining. In 2024, customs intercepted nearly 9,600 kilograms of cocaine at the port, while more than 7,000 kilograms were seized there in 2025 across a similar number of operations.

Authorities believe criminal networks are adapting their smuggling tactics to avoid detection, often using different shipping routes, ports, and concealment techniques. Dutch customs officials also noted that individual shipments appear to be getting smaller, suggesting traffickers may be spreading drugs across multiple loads to reduce risk if one shipment is intercepted.

Most cocaine intercepted in the Netherlands continues to originate from Latin America, particularly from countries such as Ecuador and Brazil. Officials say international cooperation with authorities in these regions has increased as part of efforts to disrupt the flow of drugs destined for the European market.

Dutch ports remain among the primary entry points for cocaine shipments entering Europe, making them a key focus for law-enforcement operations targeting international trafficking networks.
