Part 5 of 7 — A Weekly Sunday Exclusive Series
Inside Khun Sa’s heroin empire in the Golden Triangle and how he controlled one of the world’s most powerful drug trafficking networks.

Khun Sa – The Opium King of the Golden Triangle
While Latin American cartels dominated headlines in the West, Khun Sa controlled one of the most significant heroin-producing regions in the world. Operating in Southeast Asia’s Golden Triangle the mountainous border region of Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos, Khun Sa became one of the most influential figures in the global heroin trade during the 1970s and 1980s.
At his height, his organization was believed to control a substantial portion of the world’s heroin supply.
Born in 1934 in what is now Myanmar, Khun Sa grew up in a region shaped by political instability and armed insurgencies. He formed a militia in his youth, positioning himself as both a regional power broker and a participant in the opium trade.
Unlike purely criminal enterprises, Khun Sa’s organization operated within a complex political landscape. Armed groups, local authorities, and shifting alliances blurred the line between insurgency and narcotics trafficking.
By the 1970s, Khun Sa had consolidated control over major opium-growing territories. His network refined opium into heroin and moved it through regional and international routes.
The remoteness of the Golden Triangle, combined with weak central governance, allowed operations to flourish. For years, Khun Sa maintained influence through a combination of military strength, negotiation, and economic leverage.
Under increasing international pressure, particularly from the United States, Myanmar authorities eventually moved to limit Khun Sa’s activities. In 1996, he negotiated a surrender agreement with the Myanmar government.
He lived out the remainder of his life in relative quiet, dying in 2007. His departure marked the end of one of the most prominent heroin empires of the 20th century.
Khun Sa’s story reflects the intersection of geopolitics and narcotics trafficking. His influence demonstrated how drug economies can become deeply embedded in regions marked by conflict and limited state control.
Did you know… the Golden Triangle?
The Golden Triangle was once responsible for a large share of the world’s heroin production, making it one of the most strategically important narcotics regions in history.
