A second suspect has been charged in a Hawaii murder tied to meth trafficking after a victim was allegedly killed over a drug debt.

Federal prosecutors have charged a second man in connection with a fatal shooting in Hawaii that investigators say was linked to a methamphetamine trafficking conspiracy.
Authorities announced that Taliau Tauvela-Afalava, 31, of Aiea, Hawaii, appeared in federal court after being named in a superseding indictment related to the killing. He has been added as a co-defendant alongside Filimone Tavake, 38, of San Francisco, who was previously charged in the case.
According to court documents, the homicide occurred on March 27, 2021, when the victim was shot multiple times while standing outside his residence. Prosecutors allege the killing was tied to a dispute involving unpaid methamphetamine connected to an ongoing drug distribution conspiracy.
Investigators reviewing surveillance footage identified a vehicle without license plates driving near the victim’s home shortly before the shooting. The footage allegedly showed two men exiting the vehicle and walking toward the area of the residence. Minutes later, gunshots were heard and the same individuals were seen running back toward the vehicle.
Law enforcement later located the vehicle captured on video and conducted a forensic analysis of its infotainment system. Investigators say the system contained phone data linked to numbers associated with both defendants, helping connect them to the incident.
Tavake had previously been indicted in 2024 and arrested shortly afterward in California in connection with the case. Prosecutors allege the shooting was carried out as part of a broader conspiracy involving the distribution of methamphetamine.
If convicted, the defendants could face severe federal penalties, including lengthy prison sentences. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue examining the circumstances surrounding the drug trafficking operation and the fatal shooting tied to it.
