Meta will remove end-to-end encrypted chats on Instagram starting May 8, 2026, citing low adoption of the privacy feature.

Meta has announced plans to discontinue end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) chats on Instagram, marking a significant shift in the platform’s messaging security features.
The company confirmed that support for encrypted direct messages will end on May 8, 2026. Users currently using the feature will receive instructions on how to download messages or media from affected conversations before the change takes effect.
According to Meta, the decision was largely driven by low user adoption of encrypted messaging within Instagram’s direct message system. The company said users who still want end-to-end encrypted communication can continue using WhatsApp, which remains Meta’s primary platform for secure messaging.
Instagram first began testing encrypted messaging in 2021 as part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s broader plan to create a more privacy-focused messaging ecosystem across Meta’s platforms. However, the feature was never enabled by default and was only available in select regions and through opt-in settings.
The technology briefly gained wider use in 2022, when encrypted direct messages were made available to adult users in Ukraine and Russia during the early weeks of the Russia-Ukraine war.
End-to-end encryption is widely considered one of the strongest privacy protections in digital communications, as it ensures that only the sender and recipient can read messages. Even service providers cannot access the content once encryption is applied.
However, the technology has long been controversial. Law enforcement agencies and child safety groups have argued that encrypted messaging can make it harder to detect illegal activities such as the distribution of child exploitation material or terrorist propaganda an issue often referred to as the “Going Dark” problem.
Meta’s decision to remove encrypted messaging from Instagram may therefore reignite the ongoing debate between user privacy advocates and law-enforcement authorities over the balance between digital security and public safety.
The change will take effect globally in May 2026, after which encrypted chats on Instagram will no longer be supported.
