A Tampa smoke shop owner is accused of buying narcotics on the dark web and reselling them, linked to a fatal overdose case.

Florida smoke shop owner has been arrested after authorities accused him of purchasing narcotics on the dark web using cryptocurrency and reselling them locally, in a case linked to a fatal overdose.
Ryan Perez, owner of two smoke shops in the Tampa area, was taken into custody following a lengthy investigation by the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office. Officials say the probe began more than a year ago after receiving intelligence that Perez was involved in drug distribution.
According to investigators, Perez allegedly used cryptocurrency transactions to acquire narcotics from dark web marketplaces, which were then distributed in the Tampa Bay region. Authorities believe this method allowed him to operate with a degree of anonymity while sourcing drugs from international or online suppliers.
The investigation intensified after a fatal overdose in Pasco County on December 26, 2025, which detectives say was connected to the drugs being distributed. That incident became a key turning point in identifying and building a case against the suspect.
Law enforcement officials allege that Perez used his businesses as a front while conducting illegal narcotics sales behind the scenes. He was ultimately arrested in Spring Hill, Florida, and now faces multiple charges related to drug trafficking.
Authorities emphasized that the case highlights the growing role of dark web marketplaces and cryptocurrency in modern drug trafficking operations, making investigations more complex and often requiring extended surveillance and digital tracking.
The case remains ongoing, and officials have not ruled out additional charges or arrests as investigators continue to examine the full scope of the operation.
