Hong Kong Seizes $36.5M Drugs in Dual Bust

Hong Kong Customs seizes $36.5M in cannabis and ketamine. Three suspects arrested in major anti-smuggling operations.

Hong Kong Customs has dismantled two major drug trafficking operations, seizing narcotics valued at approximately $36.5 million in a coordinated crackdown.

Authorities confiscated around 106 kilograms of suspected cannabis buds and 36 kilograms of suspected ketamine following operations carried out on March 10. Three individuals linked to the cases were arrested.

In the first case, officers inspected a sea cargo shipment arriving from Canada that had been declared as household goods. During examination, a large quantity of suspected cannabis was discovered concealed inside a pool table. A 55-year-old man was later arrested in connection with the shipment.

The second case involved a joint operation between Hong Kong Customs and Mainland Chinese anti-smuggling authorities. Officials intercepted a parcel sent from France via the mainland, which had been declared as aquarium materials. Inside, officers uncovered ketamine hidden within bags of volcanic mineral substances.

Following further investigation, authorities conducted a controlled delivery on March 16, leading to the arrest of two additional suspects, aged 58 and 44, in separate locations.

All three suspects have been released on bail as investigations continue.

Under Hong Kong law, drug trafficking remains a serious criminal offence, carrying penalties of up to life imprisonment and a fine of $5 million upon conviction.
