Spanish police discover underground tunnel used to smuggle hashish from Morocco into Ceuta, arresting 27 suspects.

Spanish authorities have uncovered a sophisticated underground tunnel believed to have been used to smuggle large quantities of hashish from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.
Police said the tunnel was hidden beneath an industrial warehouse and formed part of a complex smuggling infrastructure designed to move drugs under the heavily guarded border between Africa and Europe.
According to investigators, the structure stretched across three underground levels and included a descent shaft, a storage chamber, and the main tunnel itself. The passage was equipped with a rail system and an underground crane, allowing traffickers to transport shipments of hashish more efficiently.
The discovery was made during a major law-enforcement operation targeting organized drug trafficking networks operating between Morocco and Spain. Authorities seized 17 metric tons of hashish and approximately €1.4 million in cash, while 27 people were arrested in connection with the investigation.
Ceuta, along with the nearby Spanish enclave of Melilla, forms the European Union’s only land border with Africa, making the region a key route for narcotics entering Europe.
Officials say most hashish smuggling operations in the area typically rely on high-speed boats crossing the Mediterranean. However, the discovery of the tunnel highlights the increasingly sophisticated methods traffickers are using to bypass border controls.
Spain remains a major entry point for cannabis resin into the European market. According to European drug monitoring data, the country accounted for around 68% of all resin seizures in the EU in recent years, reflecting the scale of trafficking routes running from North Africa into Europe.
Authorities say investigations into the tunnel network and the criminal groups behind it are ongoing.
