Stolen Romanian Gold Helmet Recovered in Netherlands

Dutch police recover 2,500-year-old Romanian gold helmet stolen in Drents Museum heist; suspects already on trial.

Dutch authorities have recovered a priceless Romanian gold helmet stolen during a high-profile museum heist last year, according to reports confirmed by an art detective involved in the case.

The artifact, known as the Helmet of Coțofenești, was taken from the Drents Museum in Assen in January 2025 along with several gold bracelets. Art detective Arthur Brand announced that the helmet has now been located, with sources indicating that police have also recovered additional stolen items.

Officials have yet to formally confirm the recovery, but prosecutors scheduled a press conference to announce new developments. The museum itself closed temporarily due to what it described as “unforeseen circumstances.”

The heist took place in the early hours of January 25, 2025, when thieves used explosives to break into the museum and smash display cases. The stolen items on loan from Romania were among the most valuable pieces in the exhibition, with a total insured value of about €5.7 million.

According to reports, the recovered helmet has sustained minor damage. Authorities are also believed to have retrieved at least two of the stolen gold bracelets, though the full extent of the recovery remains unclear.

The theft sparked international outrage, particularly in Romania, where the artifacts are considered part of the country’s cultural heritage. Experts had feared the items might be melted down due to their high gold value, though investigators suspected they were still intact.

Several suspects linked to the robbery have already been arrested and are expected to stand trial starting in mid-April. Investigators believe the group carried out a coordinated operation targeting specific high-value artifacts.

Authorities say the investigation is ongoing as they work to fully recover the stolen collection and determine the broader network behind the heist.
