Versus Dark Web Market Admin Extradited to U.S.

German national Patrick Schmitz extradited April 29, 2026, to U.S. for running Versus dark web marketplace with 380K users.

A suspected operator of a major dark web marketplace has been extradited from Colombia to the United States to face federal charges, U.S. authorities confirmed on April 30, 2026.

Patrick Schmitz, a 37-year-old German national living in Colombia, was transferred to U.S. custody on April 29, 2026, following his earlier arrest in June 2024. He is accused of creating and running “The Versus Project,” also known as Versus, a large-scale online marketplace operating on the dark web.

Prosecutors allege that the platform enabled more than 380,000 registered users to trade illegal goods, including drugs such as heroin, stolen identification documents, counterfeit currency, malware, and hacking tools.

The marketplace operated between November 2019 and May 2022, facilitating over 300,000 transactions and generating millions of dollars in illicit sales, according to court documents.

Authorities say Schmitz played a central role in the platform’s day-to-day operations, including managing vendors, resolving disputes, and overseeing staff involved in running the site. He also allegedly promoted the marketplace and helped expand its user base across the dark web.

Following his extradition, Schmitz appeared before a U.S. magistrate judge in Newark, New Jersey, where he was ordered detained pending trial. He faces multiple charges tied to his alleged involvement in facilitating illegal online trade.

U.S. officials said the case highlights ongoing efforts to target administrators of dark web marketplaces and disrupt global cybercrime networks, emphasizing that individuals operating anonymously online can still be identified and prosecuted.
