FBI Springfield announced 29 arrests during Operation Viper targeting violent crime, gangs, drugs, and child predators.

The FBI’s Springfield Field Office announced 29 arrests as part of “Operation Viper,” a coordinated crackdown targeting violent crime, gang activity, drug trafficking, and crimes against children across central and southern Illinois.
The operation involved FBI agents working alongside state and local law enforcement agencies throughout the Springfield division’s 84-county region. Authorities said the initiative focused on identifying violent offenders, dismantling criminal networks, and seizing illegal drugs and firearms connected to organised criminal activity.
According to officials, the enforcement campaign resulted in dozens of law enforcement actions, including arrests linked to gang-related violence, narcotics offences, and child exploitation investigations. Investigators also seized firearms, controlled substances, and other evidence during the operation.
FBI Springfield Special Agent in Charge Christopher J.S. Johnson said the operation reflected the bureau’s continued focus on violent crime reduction and protecting vulnerable victims. He described the initiative as a coordinated effort involving federal, state, and local agencies working together to target repeat offenders and dangerous criminal groups across Illinois communities.
Authorities said Operation Viper forms part of a broader nationwide FBI strategy aimed at combating violent crime through rapid deployment task forces and intelligence-driven enforcement actions. Similar FBI-led Viper operations in other US regions have resulted in large-scale arrests tied to gangs, firearms trafficking, organised drug distribution, and fugitive investigations.
Nationally, FBI operations conducted under related violent crime initiatives have led to thousands of arrests, major narcotics seizures, and the recovery of illegal firearms, including modified fully automatic weapons. Officials said law enforcement agencies continue expanding multi-agency operations to target organised criminal networks operating across state lines.
The FBI stated that investigations connected to Operation Viper remain ongoing and additional arrests or federal charges may follow as investigators continue analysing evidence seized during the crackdown.
