Two Men Charged After €80K Drug Seizure in Athy

Two men appeared in court after Gardaí seized €80,000 worth of cannabis and cocaine during a raid in Athy, Kildare.

Two men have been charged following the seizure of approximately €80,000 worth of suspected drugs during a Garda operation in Athy, County Kildare. The raid was carried out on May 16, 2026, by officers attached to the Kildare South Drugs Unit.

According to Gardaí, investigators executed a search warrant under the Misuse of Drugs Act at a residential property in Athy, where officers discovered approximately €60,000 worth of suspected cannabis and €20,000 worth of suspected cocaine. Authorities also seized around €8,500 in cash, drug paraphernalia linked to the sale and distribution of narcotics, and a hydraulic compressor believed to be connected to drug packaging operations.

Two adult men, one in his 20s and another in his 30s, were arrested at the scene and taken to Newbridge Garda Station for questioning under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice Drug Trafficking Act 1996. Both men were later charged in connection with the investigation and appeared before Naas District Court on May 18, 2026.

Gardaí objected to bail during the court hearing, but both accused men were granted bail subject to a €5,000 cash lodgement and were remanded in custody pending further bail proceedings. Authorities have not yet publicly released the identities of the accused.

Investigators said the drugs seized during the operation will undergo forensic examination by Forensic Science Ireland as part of the ongoing probe.

The Athy raid forms part of wider anti-drug trafficking operations being conducted across Ireland under Operation Tara, the national Garda strategy targeting organised crime groups involved in narcotics distribution and money laundering. In recent months, Gardaí have also carried out major seizures in Athy linked to larger organised crime investigations, including a separate operation in April 2026 in which approximately €7 million worth of cannabis was recovered and four suspects were arrested.

Authorities confirmed investigations into the latest Athy seizure remain ongoing.
