Three people were arrested in Helvoirt over suspected poaching and illegal firearms after officers found giraffe and monkey skulls.
Three people have been arrested in Helvoirt, Brabant, on suspicion of poaching and using illegal firearms, following an investigation by the enforcement team Samen Sterk in Brabant (SSiB).
The arrests took place during the week. Two of the suspects were caught in the act on Thursday, while a third person was arrested on Friday morning, according to SSiB.
Officers also discovered a collection of hunting trophies during the operation. Among the items were giraffe and monkey skulls, along with stuffed bears and birds of prey.
The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) is investigating the animal trophies found during the arrests.
The three suspects are now required to demonstrate that they obtained the animal trophies legally.
The discovery of the trophies forms part of the wider investigation into suspected poaching. Authorities have not yet established that all of the items were obtained illegally.
Police also seized firearms and ammunition during the operation. The suspects are suspected of possessing and using illegal firearms in connection with the investigation.
SSiB, which carried out the investigation, has not indicated that the suspects have been convicted of any offenses. The arrests are part of an ongoing investigation, and the allegations against the three people remain subject to further examination.
The NVWA’s investigation into the animal trophies is expected to help determine whether they were legally obtained.
