Police found 204 nitrous oxide canisters, ecstasy, MDMA and ketamine buried at Creamfields before 80,000 fans arrived.
Police have uncovered a sizeable stash of illegal drugs buried around the Creamfields festival site in Daresbury, Cheshire, just days before thousands of music fans were due to arrive.
The discovery was made during specialist searches carried out by Cheshire Constabulary as part of preparations for Creamfields 2026. The annual electronic music festival was expected to attract up to 80,000 people over the August Bank Holiday weekend.
The first round of pre-festival searches uncovered Class A, B and C drugs that had been hidden and buried around the site.
Police recovered approximately 204 canisters of nitrous oxide, along with large bags containing ecstasy, MDMA and ketamine tablets.
Images released by Cheshire Constabulary also showed green ecstasy tablets featuring a Cornetto-style logo among the drugs recovered. The police did not provide an overall weight or street value for the seized drugs.
The searches were part of what Cheshire Constabulary described as pre-event “disruption work”. Specialist officers have been searching the grounds before the festival opens in an effort to prevent drugs and other criminal activity from reaching the event.
According to police, burying drugs at the site is a tactic that has been used before. Individuals can attempt to hide substances in advance and return later to retrieve them once the festival is underway.
Superintendent Andy Blizard, who was overseeing the Creamfields policing operation, said officers expected to uncover more drugs as the searches continued.
He also said the festival operates a zero-tolerance policy towards drugs.
Cheshire Constabulary said its officers had already begun enquiries to identify who was responsible for the buried drugs.
In an unusual message, police also invited anyone who had buried a rucksack or holdall at the site to contact them if they wanted it back. The force said officers were working to identify the owners of the bags and suggested they could expect to hear from police.
The initial searches were completed before the festival opened, but police said the operation would continue in the run-up to the event.
Creamfields 2026 was scheduled to take place at Daresbury from Thursday 27 August through Monday 31 August, with up to 80,000 visitors expected.
During the festival, Cheshire Police will work alongside event organisers and security staff, maintaining a visible presence and responding to crime and disorder.
The discovery of the buried drugs means a significant quantity of substances has already been removed from the site before festival-goers arrived. Police nevertheless expect further searches to take place throughout the preparations for the event.
