Sinaloa Governor and 9 others Charged in U.S. Cartel Case

Sinaloa Governor Rubén Rocha Moya and 9 officials charged April 29, 2026, in U.S. for alleged ties to drug trafficking cartel.

U.S. authorities have charged the governor of Sinaloa and nine current and former Mexican officials in a sweeping drug trafficking case linked to one of the world’s most powerful cartels.

On April 29, 2026, federal prosecutors in New York unsealed an indictment accusing Rubén Rocha Moya and nine others of conspiring with the Sinaloa Cartel to import large quantities of narcotics into the United States.

According to the charges, the officials allegedly helped traffic fentanyl, cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine across the border while using their positions in government and law enforcement to shield cartel operations. Prosecutors claim the group received millions of dollars in bribes in exchange for protection and political support.

Investigators also allege that members of the network provided sensitive law enforcement information, facilitated safe passage for drug shipments, and allowed cartel-linked violence to occur without intervention. The indictment ties the conspiracy to the “Chapitos,” the faction led by the sons of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.

Among those charged are senior officials across multiple levels of government, including police commanders and political figures in Sinaloa. One defendant is accused of involvement in the kidnapping and killing of a DEA informant, further underscoring the severity of the case.

U.S. officials described the indictment as a major escalation in efforts to combat corruption tied to transnational drug trafficking. The charges emphasize that cartel operations rely heavily on cooperation from officials in positions of power.

Rocha Moya has denied the allegations, calling them politically motivated. None of the defendants were reported to be in U.S. custody at the time the charges were announced, and extradition proceedings may follow as the case develops.
